Taste of Joburg – A Festival Of Food

Processed with Moldiv I am not usually one for crowds, in fact I will do almost anything to avoid crowded events, except the Taste of Joburg which in my opinion is totally worth it. Being a foodie, it is a wonderful and unique opportunity to get a taste of the amazing city we love in. I loved watching people enjoying the food, making distinctions in flavor, textures and savoring each bite.

I was asked to do an article for the event by the fabulous online magazine, More Than Food and was lucky enough to get a media pass. Not wanting to leave you guys out, I thought I would share my article and pictures with you too.

My day started off with a heavenly and highly recommended coconut lemonade ice pop from Las Paletas (My hubby had the strawberry and cream) and a glass of Graham Beck rose bubbly. A great combination by the way, and totally up my ally!

We then proceeded to taste our way through delicious small plates of food. From Sprout 360 we got the crispy pork belly – gorgeously tender, slightly salty and sweet. Served with a stewed piece of pear and a rocket and apple salad. We got a spiced Greek lamb and tzatziki slider and anise rubbed pulled pork in pita from Prosopa. Then, there was the melt in your mouth chilli salt squid with cardamom, mayo and tomato atchar from Licorish Bistro and a decadent oyster with MCC jelly, marron caviar and grape from Roots @ Forum Homini. The juiciest and tender braised beef ribs with chips and minted cream cheese from Beluga as well as a bold spicy fried peanut butter calamari. We also tried the pork wrapped in prosciutto with a bean tomato sauce and fresh pesto from Vivace, a subtle and sublime combo. Blackanese Sushi Bar seemed very popular with 20-minute queues patiently waiting in anticipation for some of their super fresh looking sushi as well as the chilli and coriander marinated prawns.

To complement my food journey, I had a cold glass of crisp Sauvignon Blanc from Morgenster and my husband tried out the Soweto Gold lager, which he thought was very tasty indeed! We noticed quite a fuss over a drink called Rekorderlig and decided to give the strawberry and lime a try. It was poured into a cup with plenty of ice mint and lime, Yum mee! It’s a drink from Sweden and the whole package including the bottle is very stylish and oozing with that Swedish simplicity and style. Its absolutely delicious and dangerously good, if you know what I mean ;)

We ended the day off with an espresso and desserts. White chocolate and cardamom tart with a lemon, ginger curd and a dainty and light semolina cake with orange and clove syrup and fragrant mascarpone. A perfect ending and great way to celebrate the flavour of Jozi!
